Independence of the seas in the Caribbean, can you take duty free drink on board, also any feedback/advice?

also, how easy is it to phone home, (germany), as my parents are looking after my children and I want to make sure that I can contact them, can they call me direct to my room?

Answer :
You can go ashore and buy duty free alcohol, this is not a problem. However, when you get back on-board the ship your bags will be scanned and your alcohol will be confiscated and given back to you at the end of the cruise.

You can make calls abroad and received incoming calls at sea. However, making calls is very expensive. When you book your cruise you can ask for the ships direct line telephone number, when your relatives ring this number the ship can direct the call into the stateroom required.

On making calls it is best to try and wait until you see/are near land and utilise your mobile as this is still likely to be cheaper than using the ships satellite line from your stateroom to make calls home

Answer :
First question: Yes, you can buy duty-free alcohol at the ports, or on the ship. However, they will confiscate it and keep it for you until the night before you disembark. It is one of the purposes of their x-ray machines at the entrance of the ship.
Second question: Yes, you can make and receive calls on the ship. Contact the cruise line for details, but it does get expensive on a per minute and possibly a per call basis. The also have a telegram type service.
You should be able to make international calls for much less at your ports of call.

Answer :
You can take it on board, but they normally collect it from you and return it to you when you depart the boat. Calling on board is very expensive, might be easier to email.
