Answer :
Some ships have wireless Internet absolutely everywhere, but all ships offer it in selected WiFi hotspots around the ship. Unless you have 10 cruises under your belt and have attained Elite status, Internet access at sea is not cheap. It would be best to share a bundled plan with a friend. I do know that it is 75c a minute in the Internet cafe. Less if you purchase access in 100 minute increments. There are also Internet cafe's in port.

Independence of the seas in the Caribbean, can you take duty free drink on board, also any feedback/advice?

also, how easy is it to phone home, (germany), as my parents are looking after my children and I want to make sure that I can contact them, can they call me direct to my room?

Answer :
You can go ashore and buy duty free alcohol, this is not a problem. However, when you get back on-board the ship your bags will be scanned and your alcohol will be confiscated and given back to you at the end of the cruise.

You can make calls abroad and received incoming calls at sea. However, making calls is very expensive. When you book your cruise you can ask for the ships direct line telephone number, when your relatives ring this number the ship can direct the call into the stateroom required.

On making calls it is best to try and wait until you see/are near land and utilise your mobile as this is still likely to be cheaper than using the ships satellite line from your stateroom to make calls home

Answer :
First question: Yes, you can buy duty-free alcohol at the ports, or on the ship. However, they will confiscate it and keep it for you until the night before you disembark. It is one of the purposes of their x-ray machines at the entrance of the ship.
Second question: Yes, you can make and receive calls on the ship. Contact the cruise line for details, but it does get expensive on a per minute and possibly a per call basis. The also have a telegram type service.
You should be able to make international calls for much less at your ports of call.

Answer :
You can take it on board, but they normally collect it from you and return it to you when you depart the boat. Calling on board is very expensive, might be easier to email.

How do i become the captain of The Independence of the Seas? :)?

I like it :)
Im 16, and iv never driven a boat before ><

Answer :
You are the perfect age to be asking this question!
Your best option is the US Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point NY. Besides being the fastest route to your goal, it's also a for year university degree which is ABSOLUTELY FREE.

http://www.usmma.edu/

There are other, commercial schools as well, such as California Maritime Academy, but they are pretty pricey. Both of these routes will start you out (after four years of schooling) as a Third Mate, Oceans, unlimited tonnage.

You can also start out as a deckhand (Ordinary Seaman) on a boat or ship and work your way up the "hawsepipe", either by rank, tonnage or both. It takes a lot longer, but you'll have a much more rounded knowledge once you get there.

In any case, look at the US Coast Guard's National Marine Center website for all of the qualifications and requirement's you'll need for any deck rating or commission.

Good luck!!

Answer :
You could begin by attending and graduating from one of the many Merchant Marine Academies, getting hired by one of the shipping companies and working your way up from the ranks of the lower officers. You can at some point apply to work on larger ships or a cruise line.

BTW The captain can be considered a high ranking executive position. He doesn't drive the ship, the helmsman does.

Answer :
You could contact "Royal Caribbean International" and ask if they have a vacancy!
If you really have ambition, why not look at Captain of "The Oasis of the Seas"?

Answer :
coast guard has beginner course's also going into the us maritime academy will teach you

Is anyone else going on the independence of the seas cruise on march 20th?

im 14 my whole familys going just wana know if theres ppl we can chill with

Answer :
Best bet to see who else will be on your cruise is to join http://www.cruisecritic.com/ Then, go to "boards" from there, go to "roll calls". Then look for your cruise line. Once you click your cruise line, you will look for your ship and date. Thats the best way to see some of the other travelers on your ship

Hope I helped!
