Royal Caribbean independence of the sea?

Hi, my 14 year old son is going on a 14 day Royal Caribbean independence of the sea Mediterranean cruise with his friend and there family. I was just wondering some questions?
1. Are the power sockets u.k
2. How much money will he need a day?
3. What sort of dress code is it?
4. are there cash Machine/atm on the boat.
5. What sort of things would you pack?

P.S he is going on the 1st of August

Answer :
This is from the RC web site: " What electrical voltage is offered on board?
A: North American standard, 110 volts AC is used on all of our ships. Outlet adapter is required for European standard. European standard (220 volts AC, round prongs). "

Once you board the ship everything on board is cashless. When you first board the ship each passenger is issued a cruise card that serves as your room key, pass to get on and off the ship, and charge card for everything you buy on board the ship. The charges of all family members can be put on one account and subsequently paid by a charge card, or you can request separate accounts for each person or for specific family members. So you and your son can be on the same account and other members can be separate if you want it that way.

So you'll need sufficient funds in cash for purchasing small souvenirs in port stops and also maybe taxis and food items you may decide to buy off ship, like a soft drink, water, or snack. You didn't say which countries but you'll most likely need Euros and should get some before you leave from your bank for the best exchange rate and to minimize other charges for the currency. I generally plan on about $50 a day for the small stuff and use a credit card for large purchases.

YES, the ship has an ATM near the purser's desk and also in the casino. However, be careful using the casino ATM because they sometimes charge a hefty fee for transactions. A better thing to do is just go to the casino cage/change window and request cash on your account. Just give them your cruise card and whatever cash you get goes on your on-board tab. They will charge $3 per $100 for this. But then you don't have an ATM fee from your bank.

The dress on ship is casual all day until 6:00PM with most everyone in shorts and/or swim wear, or exercise clothes. People going on tours from the ship wear jeans, slacks, casual shirts and sweaters, maybe a light jacket and comfortable walking shoes. The only places where you have to worry about special clothes are some churches and mosques where arms and legs must be covered. So take:
-swim wear (at least 2),
-shorts, tank tops and "T's"
-sandals,
-sun glasses and sun screen, lotions,
-a cap or big hat for the sun,
-a book if you are a reader,
-your music player,
-sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym,
-good walking shoes,
-your camera, its charger or extra batteries and
-other personal toiletries including tooth paste, mouth wash or lotions.

Your cabin will have towels and soap provided, including pool and beach towels, and a hair dryer. It will also have a generic hair shampoo so you do not need to bring that unless you like a specific brand.

After 6:00 PM they request that you wear "sports or resort casual" attire. That's attire that you would expect a person to wear in a business office, (like a bank employee), shirt with a collar, slacks, skirt, blouse, etc. You can still wear shorts and swim wear in the pools and spas but not in public areas like dining rooms and restaurants, show rooms, bars, casino, etc. Shorts, jeans, flip flops, "T" shirts, and swim wear are ALWAYS off limits in the main dining room. BUT, you can always wear those in the casual dining areas like the buffet.

Don't over pack , take clothes that you can mix and match tops and bottoms and plan to wear each piece TWICE. RC ships DO NOT have a self service laundry if you need to wash so you can pay to use the laundry service and they will wash, press, fold and return it the next day.

Your cruise will have a formal night or two when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship’s Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED attire but NOT required attire. You will not be denied entry to the main dining room or any other venue if you decide not to dress up, as long as you are at least sports casual. But most people do dress up. A gown or party dress for women and a suit or tux for men. Some people dress up both formal nights, some don't. We always take the formal stuff off after dinner and a photo or two and go back to casual stuff. So maybe take one suit or dress for the formal dinners and after you eat and have a photo taken go change back to casual. Now you could plan to not have dinner in the main dining room on formal nights but then you'll miss some of the best meals of your cruise. Besides, there will be other who just dress sports casual on formal nights so you will not appear out of place.

- Its best to pack using soft-sided luggage because with space limited in your cabin it fits under the beds better if its not hard sided luggage.

- Pack using the vacuum clothing bags (about $20 for 3 at Target) so that you can get more in your bag AND so that if the TSA at the airport opens your bag they can see what's inside without rummaging through your things.

-Take a small carry-on bag for the last night of the cruise. On the last evening you will be required to put your luggage outside your cabin by about 2:00 AM so that they can start taking it down to the lower deck for offloading the next morning. So you will need a small bag for your toiletries and your clothes that you sleep in.

Answer :
Days onboard are casual and you'll be most comfortable in sport clothes and resort wear. Shoes should be low-heeled for deck activities. Bring a few swimsuits so you'll always have a dry one. You don't have to bring towels, as they are provided. And don't forget your camera and binoculars, so you don't miss a thing.

When you're onshore, shorts, polo shirts, light sweaters, khakis and jeans are perfectly acceptable. Of course, you'll want to pack some comfortable walking shoes as well as a hat and sunscreen for protection from the sun. A rain slicker and compact umbrella may come in handy for the occasional downpour. You should also bring some formal wear for formal occasions. Cocktail dresses for women, suit and ties or tuxedos for men. You can arrange to rent a tuxedo onboard, if you prefer.

Does anyone have any information on the desktop publisher position on cruise ships?

I've had 3 months working on RCCL Independence of the Seas and I would like to be back on cruise ships. My background is in Graphic Design and I am looking for a desktop publishing position. Any information would be great! Thanks.

Answer :
I think it might be helpful for you to apply to work in the department that publishes the menu, daily news, and daily program stuff -- something in passenger services or purser's office? I can't imagine it would be a full time job, though, and suspect it is combined with other duties on the ship.

Conservatives..Care to share a Tim the Tool Man moment : New US Navy Ship!?

Is this bad to the bone or what? Click on the picture!
http://www.baynews9.com/content/36/2009/…

By DAVID SHARP
BATH, Maine (AP) -- The Navy's need for speed is being answered by a pair of warships that have reached freeway speeds during testing at sea.

Independence, a 418-foot warship built in Alabama, boasts a top speed in excess of 45 knots, or about 52 mph, and sustained 44 knots for four hours during builder trials that wrapped up this month off the Gulf Coast. The 378-foot Freedom, a ship built in Wisconsin by a competing defense contractor, has put up similar numbers.

Both versions of the Littoral Combat Ship use powerful diesel engines, as well as gas turbines for extra speed. They use steerable waterjets instead of propellers and rudders and have shallower drafts than conventional warships, letting them zoom close to shore.

The ships, better able to chase down pirates, have been fast-tracked because the Navy wants vessels that can operate in coastal, or littoral, waters. Freedom is due to be deployed next year, two years ahead of schedule.

Answer :
I was on a speed boat on a NH lake that went about 40mph. I nearly crapped my pants. 40mph on water feels like 100mph does in a car. A boat as big as the Freedom going 52 mph is almost unbelievable. As a previous answerer said, that ship is bad a**.

Answer :
That is pretty badazz, and for a ship that is fawking fast. Do they also have stealth capabilities? How much do they cost? How much can they carry?

Answer :
I'm very familiar with the combat capabilities of the LCS-series vessels, thanks in a large part to novels of Dale "The Patriot" Brown (as opposed to Dan "The Apostate" Brown)

Answer :
Australia would like a dozen of them to run down those illegals trying to get into Australia. Although I say just blow them out of the water and they will stop coming.

Answer :
Cool ships! I wonder what the new world order will do with them after Obama kills off America?

Answer :
As Tim the Toolman would say "Uhhhh Uhhh Uhhh"! Wow- it's hard to believe something that big can travel at that speed! Something we can be proud of for sure!

Answer :
Wonder what Al Gore is thinking about the new ships using so much gas and destroying warming global. I am proud of the men that had the know how to build these ships and to even come up with the idea of them. Some Americans are smarter than the rest of the world thinks we are. Now if men can build ships that go this fast why can't we control our borders
and keep the illegal aliens out of our country. Are ship builders smarter than the people we elect to run our country? Maybe we should start electing more ship builders than lawyers to take care of us.

Which Cruise Lines should we take?

I have been doing some research on which cruise lines and it's ships stop in Lisbon, Portugal. Here are the cruise ships that stop in Lisbon. Which Cruise Lines should we take? Which cruise lines should we avoid?

Royal Caribbean- Regent of the Seas/Independence of the Seas
Holland America- Noordam/Prinsendam
P&O Cruises- Ventura/Oriana
Princess Cruises- Ruby Princess
Celebrity Cruises- Celebrity Constellation
Norwegian Cruise Line- Norwegian Jewel/Norwegian Gem
Carnival Cruise Lines- Carnival Splendor

Answer :
Who is going with you? How old are you? Look over the rest of the itinerary and see which one has other stops that interest you the most.

Royal and Carnival are great and the least expensive. B/c of that, you will have more young people and more children on your cruise. I have no idea if you consider that a pro or a con but I am a huge fan of these two cruiselines. Good value for the money.

Princess- a great cruise line. More expensive though.

Celebrity- the most expensive line. a lot of luxuries provided that aren't going to be on the cheaper lines. Better food as well.

Norweigan- I hate. Avoid at all cost. Worst cruise imaginable and if it had not been my first cruise but lots of other people telling me that RC and Carnival were 100 times better, I may have never taken another cruise.

Holland- I'm just about to go on Holland in a couple weeks. Holland is for old people and most of the clientele will be 60+. As it's a family reunion cruise, most of my family is 60+ as well so I was outvoted. It doesn't do the 2 shows after dinner like other lines. The shore excursions will not be as athletic either as they seem to all be wheelchair accessible.

Read the reviews on each ship on cruise critic.com. They will have reviews from people who just got off the ship and some great reviews on the shore excursions offered.

Answer :
The cruises that I know myself are good to go on are Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Lines, and Princess Cruises. I either know people that have been on one, have gone on one myself, or have heard good things about these.

The cruises that I recommend you don't go on because I have heard bad things about or just have never heard anything about are Holland America, P&O Cruises, and Celebrity Cruises.

Hope this helps you!!

Answer :
Every cruise line produces a different expierence for its guests. Some - like Holland America are the more traditional style that tends to attract people who want a slower paced vacation. OTOH they have limited facilities for children.

I suggest that you find a travel agent and have them talk to you about what you want so they can recommend the cruise line that will best fit the way you want to vacation.

FYI - I am a Holland America fan. The older crowd does not bother me as I prefer good conversationalists to the 'drink until you puke' crowd.

Answer :
I would strongly reccomend Norwegian Cruise Line. They are my all-time favorite- they really do try to please you. (: But if not, I would secondly choose Royal Caribbean, and thirdly Carnival. They are all pretty good cruise lines, but these 3 are THE BEST. If you just aren't sure after all your answers talk to your local travel agent, they'll help you out alot.

Answer :
i have sailed with Royal Carribean twice and im going agian in june...they treat you very well and the service is great...there is so much to do you'll always be busy.

i recomend Royal Carribean

Enchantment of the Seas or Freedom of the Seas

Answer :
I have also sailed with Princess 9 times and once again I can't praise them enough. But unless you are over 50 years old, I would avoid Holland America. That is because this ship's customers are all most all over 50 years old.

Answer :
I've only cruised on Carnival and I love it. Check out the site I listed below and you'll find tons of information on all the cruise lines.

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/

Answer :
I've been on a Princess cruise, which was great. I've not been on any of the others though, sorry.

RCL_ Independence of the seas question?

Are the eateries at the Royal Promenade free, I do know you have to pay for Ben and Jerrys, but what about the Sorrento's pizza or the desserts available on the Royal Pormenade.?
What would be good times to go to the ice rink, rock climbing or the surf rider. Are the lines long? Any tips on the best times ( I assume port days would be better)

Answer :
I would go to your towns website for more info.

Has anyone been on the Independence of the Seas yet?

We are cruising on the Independence of the Seas this summer, we have never cruised before so can anyone answer a few questions about the cabins?

1. As our interior cabin will obviously be quite small is it comfortable enough for 2 weeks on board?
2. Is there much storage available to unpack into or is it a situation of living out of our suitcases?
3. If we can unpack ok, is there anywhere to store the empty suitcases, i.e. under the bed, etc.?
4. Do the TV's in the room have connections to plug a portable DVD or games console?

Answer :
I have never been on the Independence of the Seas but your questions apply to most every cruise ship. But the one you pick will be great!! The ship is the largest in the world and has sooo many activities and is beyond amazing. We saw it in person and have read many articles about it! Okay here we go!
1). We went on RC's smallest ship for 2 weeks and were absolutly fine. There are a lot of drawers and closets so the space is fine
2). There is drawers and closets
3). Yes suitcases can go under the bed you can fit 2 or 3 per bed if they are small
4). I'm not completley sure but I think so on question 4!

Oh and Royal Caribbean has a great site. They have lots of info. on their site and its very helpful and interactive! have fun!!

Answer :
You can find answers to these questions from experienced cruisers at CruiseCritic.com. Click on "Boards", then "Royal Caribbean" or any of the other topics that interest you. I'd suggest "First Time Cruisers", for one.

If you don't find the info you need, you can post a question and someone will surely give you an answer. You'll need to join CC to post a question, but it's free.

Independence of the seas?

we have booked a canaries cruise in sept this year, we will be travelling on the Independence of the seas, this is our first cruise, has anyone been on this ship, and what can we expect.

Answer :
I heard it was nice. My Aunt actually has been on it. HOPE THIS HELPS!!

Royal Caribbean International deployed Independence of the Seas - the third in its new Freedom class of ships in May 2008. Sharing the title of the largest, most innovative cruise ship in the world with sister ships, Freedom of the Seas and the soon-to-be-launched Liberty of the Seas.
Independence of the Seas will feature the line's signature innovations including the FlowRider surf simulator, the H2O Zone water park, an ice-skating rink, a rock-climbing wall and a boxing ring. The 3,634-guest cruise ship will sail the 2008 summer season from Southampton, United Kingdom.

Answer :
If you are in England, pop into W. H. Smiths and check it out in a Berlitz travel book called "Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships 2009" by Douglas Ward.
He is reckoned to be the World's foremost Cruise expert.
The book (paperback costing around £20) makes good bedtime reading - I have the 2005 version which I bought when the next year's one was released.
Independence was launched after the 2005 publication, but of "Navigator of the Seas" Derek Ward's opening sentence is "a stunning, large, floating leisure resort".

Answer :
I haven't been on it. I have seen it in real life. It's huge! It looks really nice too. Good luck =]

Independence of the Seas?

Hello,

I am going on a Cruise next week on the Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas. 1st cruise also.

Has anyone ever been on this ship? Any good suggestions/feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Answer :
I have not yet cruised on the Independence but I have cruised on one of its identical twin sister ships the Freedom in November of 2006. The Freedom class ships are identical but have different names and color schemes and decor. They are the exact same size, and all have the same features.

All three ships have the rock climbing wall, the "flowrider" where you can surf right on ship, an ice skating rink, a fabulous free Ice Capades type ice show that you should not miss (tickets are free but you have to go to a designated place to get them.), a mini-golf course, a H2O Zone water park for kids, the best gymnasium on any ship, several pools and hot tubs on the pool deck, and a solarium (covered area) for adults only. The ship has a mall down its center with shops and eating places, a casino, a show room, and a bunch of lounges with a variety of music, and a disco that's really unusual because its in an unusual location.

We enjoyed our cruise on it and do recommend it and that's why we'll be cruising again, next time on the Liberty this November. The ship is huge but even with 4,000 passengers it doesn't seem crowded. A couple good things as far as crowds are concerned is the H2O Zone is a kids water park area where the youngsters can enjoy the water. Then there is the regular pool and then an adults only pool and hit tub. The kids also have Adventure Ocean which is an area of the ship just for them that has a professionally trained staff person to supervise them in activities. It includes a teen disco that is open until 2:00 AM for all of the teens to use.

I loved the balcony cabin we had. It was roomy and had plenty of space for clothes. The beds on the Freedom were great pillowtop bed and was very comfortable in comparison to beds on other ships. There was a flat panel HDTV in the room, a safe, and a shower stall with a sliding door. Our room included a love seat and coffee table.

The ship has a mall area down its middle with shops on both sides, including a barber shop, coffee shop, and a place where you can get free food 24/7. That's in addition to the 24/7 free room service. The only thing I did not like about the ship was its Windjammer Cafe where everyone goes for breakfast and lunch if they don't go to the main dining room, is too small for everyone and people were walking around looking for a table after they got their food. We decided to just order the free breakfast room service an eat on the balcony.

Cruising Tips:

-If you plan to get into the pools or hot tub as soon as you get on ship (they will be open), bring those clothes in your carry on bag; you other luggage may not get to your cabin until much later in the afternoon.

Other tips:

Most cruise lines will push drinks on you, especially the first couple days. Don't think you have to buy drinks to have fun. If you don't drink all day at home or on other vacations, then don't drink all day on ship. Plus you'll quickly run up a very high drinking bill.

The cruise lines will offer a lot of interesting tours but they will be expensive. You DO NOT have to buy tours to get off the ship in port stops. You can go off on your own and many times in Caribbean and Bahamas ports you can find cheaper tours on the pier.

There is plenty of free food on ship 24/7 so there really no reason to pay to eat in a specialty restaurant. You'll not be able to eat all of the great free food.

Cruise lines will take lots of photos of you boarding the ship, getting off in ports, at dinner, on formal nights, around the ship. These will be very expensive ($10 to $25) so take your camera with you all of the time and take your own photos and ask other passengers to take photos of you, they will gladly.

The ships have internet service but it is very expensive; likely about $50 to $60 an hour. Wait until you get to a port stop and find an internet cafe. Ask the wait staff and your cabin steward because they generally know where they are.

You can look at the Independence and its features at this web link: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruis…

Independence of the seas? Whos going?

Royal Caribbean cruise on december 13th, 2008 from Ft. Lauderdale aboard the Independence of the Seas..whos going? im 14 and looking for some cool kids to hang with that are also goin on this cruise

Answer :
You will have an absolutely amazing time. I would recommend that you sign up for all the teen activities. Even if you think they are lame things to do, they usually turn out fun (or they would drop them from the program) and you still can meet some friendly teens to hang out with.

On the other hand, just a caution. This is like a floating city. All cities have some people who do not have your best interest at heart. Do not go into anyone elses cabin unless their parents are there and your parents have met theirs and agree. Same goes for kids in your cabin. There will be kids that want to try stuff that is against the rules like throwing things overboard, smoking, drinking and drugs. Even small things like pushing all of the buttons in the elevator and running down the halls. Please, please, please don't get involved. The captain is law at sea and if you are caught you and your family may be put ashore at any port and have to pay you own way home. Be smart and you'll have a great time.

Independence of the seas HELP royal caribbean cruise ship (read description)?

im going on this in 12 days cited please tell me is this a good ship, what are some things i have to do? were are the frozen yogurt machines( not ben and jerrys)? is the food good? how are the shows please tell me everything i need to do

Answer :
Congratulations on your upcoming cruise thats really exciting!

Indipendance of the Seas is a great ship with SO much to do, see, taste & more - I am sure there will be frozen yogurt in a number of the casual dining cafe's (I know Johnny Rockets has amazing milkshakes too) - you will be given tons of great information on all of your choices, where everything is and what there is to do once you board. Every day you'll be given an itinerary of the day's activities for you to choose from also, so you'll never get a chance to be bored!

The food is great and available 24 hours a day. Check out the description of your ship, it lists all of the dining locations and info on what the food choices will be. The shows are great, with broad way style, comedy shows, ice skating shows, live music in many styles and in many places

Best wishes on your cruise, have a great time!!

Answer :
All you need to do is relax and enjoy the ship. It's a bit late to be doing much research on the ship itself and any ports you're visiting, but you can go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards", then go to any topic that piques your interest.

Have a great cruise!!

On Independence Of The Seas (Royal Caribbean Cruise),are the movies in the theater new(Like actual theaters)?

Are they new like the ones in the theater at the moment or just come out on dvd?

Answer :
I just cruised on the Liberty of the Seas (sister ship to the Independence) and went to their movie theater a couple times. The movies they showed were ones released within the past year that would be available on DVD in stores. Answer :

I went December 20th '09 and they showed many Christmas movies old and new as well as Watchmen, Obsessed, and Duplicity. It's fun to go see one movie or so though.
Have fun on your trip!

Answer :

Which cruise is better or the one u like more....Freedom, liberty, or Independence of the seas? and why?

i have only been on freedom and i loved it, im planning to cruise in the freedom class again, but i dont know which ship to choose. help.

Answer :
Assume you are talking about Royal Caribbean as those are their 3 Freedom class ships. They will all be pretty similar, just depends on the itinerary. Loved them all, but my favorite was Liberty. Liberty has the most fantastic cruise director -- lots of unusual and fun shows and activities.

Answer :
Why don't you check out each of there websites?

http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruis… - Freedom

http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruis… - Independence

http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruis… - Liberty

They are pretty much the same, good luck picking the best one!

Answer :
Those 3 ships are all the same, they are sisters. The only differences will be decor and the names of restaurants etc.

Anybody been on independence of the seas ship - what time do I need to board for 5pm departure ?

Anybody been on independence of the seas ship - what time do I need to board for 5pm departure ?

Answer :
Haven´t had the pleasure of being on this ship but from their website:

How far in advance do I need to check-in for my cruise?

A: Royal Caribbean International requires guests to be checked in no later than 60 minutes prior to the scheduled sailing time*. Guests arriving late will not be permitted to sail. This supports government regulations in some ports that require cruise lines to submit a departure manifest 60 minutes prior to sailing. Guests are requested to complete Online Check-In no later than 3 days prior to the cruise in order to expedite the pier check-in process.

*Some sailings may require an earlier check-in time. Please refer to your Guest Vacation Documents for specific information.

Happy sailing! :-)

Answer :
I haven't been, but I know each Cruise line has their own rules about when you have to be on board. We just got back from a Disney Cruise. We had to be on board by 4pm for a 5:30pm departure. Best to check with your cruise line.

I'd get there as early as possible, because the sooner you're on the ship, the more time you have to start the fun.

Have a great time

Answer :
don't try to board too early, the ship has to be emptied and cleaned before any boarding... you'll just end up waiting in the debarkation area, and it gets hot in there... take your time and board at your leisure... you'll have plenty of time to party... ENJOY!!!

Does the Independence of the seas cruise ship have wifi/internet access?

thanks in advance!

Answer :
hey im alohi!
im 14& have been on 8 royal caribbean cruises
two more this year(august+december)
yes they do but its 0.30 cents per minute:D

they also have a special cell phone program at sea

your gonna have so much to do on that ship your not gonna want to be on the computer unless you want to contact people!

anything else?
email me!!!!!
teetharerad@yahoo.com

Answer :
Some ships have wireless Internet absolutely everywhere, but all ships offer it in selected WiFi hotspots around the ship. Unless you have 10 cruises under your belt and have attained Elite status, Internet access at sea is not cheap. It would be best to share a bundled plan with a friend. I do know that it is 75c a minute in the Internet cafe. Less if you purchase access in 100 minute increments. There are also Internet cafe's in port.

Independence of the seas in the Caribbean, can you take duty free drink on board, also any feedback/advice?

also, how easy is it to phone home, (germany), as my parents are looking after my children and I want to make sure that I can contact them, can they call me direct to my room?

Answer :
You can go ashore and buy duty free alcohol, this is not a problem. However, when you get back on-board the ship your bags will be scanned and your alcohol will be confiscated and given back to you at the end of the cruise.

You can make calls abroad and received incoming calls at sea. However, making calls is very expensive. When you book your cruise you can ask for the ships direct line telephone number, when your relatives ring this number the ship can direct the call into the stateroom required.

On making calls it is best to try and wait until you see/are near land and utilise your mobile as this is still likely to be cheaper than using the ships satellite line from your stateroom to make calls home

Answer :
First question: Yes, you can buy duty-free alcohol at the ports, or on the ship. However, they will confiscate it and keep it for you until the night before you disembark. It is one of the purposes of their x-ray machines at the entrance of the ship.
Second question: Yes, you can make and receive calls on the ship. Contact the cruise line for details, but it does get expensive on a per minute and possibly a per call basis. The also have a telegram type service.
You should be able to make international calls for much less at your ports of call.

Answer :
You can take it on board, but they normally collect it from you and return it to you when you depart the boat. Calling on board is very expensive, might be easier to email.

How do i become the captain of The Independence of the Seas? :)?

I like it :)
Im 16, and iv never driven a boat before ><

Answer :
You are the perfect age to be asking this question!
Your best option is the US Merchant Marine Academy at King's Point NY. Besides being the fastest route to your goal, it's also a for year university degree which is ABSOLUTELY FREE.

http://www.usmma.edu/

There are other, commercial schools as well, such as California Maritime Academy, but they are pretty pricey. Both of these routes will start you out (after four years of schooling) as a Third Mate, Oceans, unlimited tonnage.

You can also start out as a deckhand (Ordinary Seaman) on a boat or ship and work your way up the "hawsepipe", either by rank, tonnage or both. It takes a lot longer, but you'll have a much more rounded knowledge once you get there.

In any case, look at the US Coast Guard's National Marine Center website for all of the qualifications and requirement's you'll need for any deck rating or commission.

http://www.uscg.mil/nmc/

Good luck!!

Answer :
You could begin by attending and graduating from one of the many Merchant Marine Academies, getting hired by one of the shipping companies and working your way up from the ranks of the lower officers. You can at some point apply to work on larger ships or a cruise line.

BTW The captain can be considered a high ranking executive position. He doesn't drive the ship, the helmsman does.

Answer :
You could contact "Royal Caribbean International" and ask if they have a vacancy!
If you really have ambition, why not look at Captain of "The Oasis of the Seas"?

Answer :
coast guard has beginner course's also going into the us maritime academy will teach you

Best bet to see who else will be on your cruise is to join http://www.cruisecritic.com/ Then, go to "boards" from there, go to "roll calls". Then look for your cruise line. Once you click your cruise line, you will look for your ship and date. Thats the best way to see some of the other travelers on your ship

WHAT CLOTHING STORES ARE THERE ON THE CRUISE BOAT "INDEPENDENCE OF THE SEAS" OF THE FREEDOM CLASS?

THIS BOAT IS PART OF ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISES. WHAT CLOTHING STORES ARE ON THE BOAT?

Answer :
Are you thinking clothes stores like Abercrombie or Hollister, things like that?

Yeah, you aren't going to find that. If you want to go to Abercrombie or Hollister, go to a mall.

You will mostly just find Royal Caribbean logo clothing aboard ship.

Answer :
I only recall there being one clothing store on the Royal Prominade. It had a few resort type clothes and then the items with the ships name or Royal Caribbean logo's on.
I didn't buy anything from that store but did buy some tshirts and a dress at the various ports we stopped at.

Answer :
The stores are not "brand" stores. They are all Royal Caribbean and have both casual clothing and formal attire.

Answer :
its all in the royal promenade

Does anyone know the email address of Independence of the Seas cruise ship ?

Does anyone know the email address of Independence of the Seas cruise ship ?

Answer :
royal carribean cruise lines is your best bet
write them and they can forward to the ship.

best wishes
happy cruising.

Answer :
There are dozens of email addresses for departments on the Independence, you have to be a bit more specific as to which department you are trying to contact and for what reason.

If you are trying to reach a staff member aboard the ship, you would need to send your request through the Miami office who will then forward it on to the ship.

Answer :
i see that ship alot its HUGE i live in southampton rite near wear it docks why dont u try www.RoyalCaribbean.co.uk :)

Answer :
Ask the cruise line to make sure you get the correct address, guessing may mean it does not get through!

Is the Independence of the Seas the largest ship afloat?

Is the Independence of the Seas the largest ship afloat?

Answer :
Hi Laura,

All these ships are currently in service.

Knock Nevis 564,763 tons displacement. 1,504 ft (458 m) long. Supertanker. No longer actually at sea -used for oil storage, but still in service.
Prevously named Jahre Viking.previously Seawise Giant.

TI Oceania. 441,600tons displacement. 1,245 ft (380 m ) Supertanker

Berge Stahl. 364,768 tons displacement. 1,125 ft (343 m ) Bulk cargo ship

Brasil Maru 327,180 tons. 1,115 ft (340 m) Ore carrier

Emma Mærsk 170,974 displacement. 1,302 ft (397 m) Container ship.

Independence of the Seas 160,000 gross tons. 1,112 feet (339m) long - Cuise ship.
Freedom of the Seas 160,000 gross tons. 1,112 feet (339m) long – Cruise ship
Liberty of the Seas 160,000 gross tons. 1,112 feet (339m) long – Cruise ship.

RMS Queen Mary 2. 148,528tons. 1,132 ft (345 m) Ocean liner

Nimitz class (9 /10 in service) 102,000 tons. 1,040 ft (317 m) Aircraft Carrier.

All the above ships are in service, so you decide. Do we decide by tonnage or length. Also There are Gross tons, Gross register tons, Deadweight, displacement etc several ways of measuring tonnage. So it's almost impossible to simply decide which is the biggest. You CAN ask which is the biggest cruise ship, or which is the biggest warship, or Ore Carrier, as long as the tonnages are calculated by the same method.

Answer :
The largest ship afloat today is the oil tanker Jahre Viking (originally called Seawise Giant). It measures 1,504 feet (458 meters) long and 225 feet (69m) wide.

Answer :
The Indepenence of the Seas is the largest cruise ship,
at 160,000 tons.
The largest ship ever is the Jahre Viking(seawise giant)
at 261,000 tons.

Anyone know the price of a beer on the Independence of the seas cruise ship ?

Anyone know the price of a beer on the Independence of the seas cruise ship ?

Answer :
They will no doubt charge in US dollars.....most cruise ships prices are less than they are in the UK....but no idea exactly how much they would charge...maybe $4 to $5 a pint.

Answer :
Most of the Royal Caribbean ships offer a discount on beer by the "bucket". It's basically a six pack on ice in a plastic pail.

But, if memory serves, the individual price was about $6 domestic, and $7 imported.

Be aware that there are MANY things that are included in the cost of your voyage, but many others that are not, including new fuel supplements.

The price of your cruise vacation includes:
Ship accommodations
Ocean transportation
Most meals onboard
Some beverages onboard
Most entertainment onboard

The following services are not included in the cruise price:
Dining in Specialty Restaurants such as Portofino
Dining in Johnny Rockets (Where applicable)
Spa and Salon services
ShipShape Fitness Classes (i.e. kickboxing, pilates, yoga and spinning)
Golf Simulator
Gambling (Including Bingo)
Art Auction
Any purchases made in the gift shops onboard
Shore excursions
Photographs
Video Arcade
Medical Services
Internet Access
Transfers (Unless guest has purchased our air/sea package)
Laundry and Dry Cleaning Services
Ship to Shore Telephone calls
Gratuities
Alcoholic Beverages
Non-Alcoholic Beverages (excluding water, lemonade and iced tea)

All prices are per-person, based on a double occupancy of the stateroom and are quoted in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise noted. The cruise fares quoted also do not include any applicable government taxes, fees, or surcharges that may be assessed by any governmental agencies. Such assessment is subject to change without notice at any time whether or not you have a confirmed booking under deposit or if you have made a final payment.

Note: For all North America reservations, a fuel supplement of $8 per person, per day for the first 2 guests in a stateroom (subject to a max. of $112 per person) applies; each additional guest in the stateroom will be charged $3 per person, per day (subject to a max. of $42 per person).

What are some higlights of independence of the seas cruise ship?

going on it dec 12th and want to know some good things to do ikm 14 btw

Answer :
Independence of the Seas joins the ranks of Royal Caribbean’s fleet as the third Freedom-class ship offering innovative amenities and a huge selection of entertainment and dining venues. Features such as an interactive water park with FlowRider surf simulator, cantilevered whirlpools that extend 12 feet beyond sides of ship and a full-size Everlast boxing ring are just a few of the exciting additions in store for guests. Stroll down the Royal Promenade for shopping, themed bars and lounges and restaurants. Engage in a little friendly competition on the nine-hole miniature golf course, scale the rock-climbing wall or spend a few pampering hours in the day spa. Along with the main dining room, the ship’s eateries include specialty restaurants such as Sorrento’s Pizzeria, Johnny Rockets ’50s-style diner, Portofino Italian Restaurant and Chops Grille, plus Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. A variety of themed bars and lounges -- Boleros Latin club, Schooner Bar, Vintages wine bar and the elegant Champagne Bar, just to name a few -- provide hours of entertainment, or you can tempt lady luck in the dazzling casino or watch a spectacular musical stage production in the five-story Alhambra Theatre. Every cabin contains a flat-screen TV, sofa and private bath, and Wi-Fi capability is available throughout the ship.

Has anyone ever cruised on the Independence of the Seas?

What are your experiences?

Answer :
I have not cruised on the Independence but I have cruised on the Freedom of the Seas which is identical.

We enjoyed our cruise on it and do recommend it and that's why we'll be cruising the Freedom Class again, next time on the Liberty. The ship is huge but even with 4,000 passengers it doesn't seem crowded. It took us about 30 minutes to get through the checkin line and board the ship.

A couple good things about the ship, as far as crowds are concerned, is the H2O Zone is a kids water park area where the youngsters can enjoy the water. Then there is the regular pool and then an adults only pool and hit tub. So if you have kids there is a place for them to enjoy but if you don't there are places for adults only.

The kids also have Adventure Ocean which is an area of the ship just for them that has a professionally trained staff person to supervise them in activities. It includes a teen disco that is open until 2:00 AM for all of the teens to use.

The Freedom and Liberty ships do pretty much the same itinerary rotating their itinerary between Eastern and Western Caribbean each week. So no matter which you you go on you can get almost the exact same thing. The Independence, as I understand it right now, will be permanently stationed in Europe. RC also plans to move the Freedom's home port from Miami to Port Canaveral next year and move the Mariner of the Seas (which home ports there now) to Los Angeles, Ca.

The Eastern Caribbean is usually St Thomas, St Maarten, and maybe another island like San Juan or Tortolla. The Western Caribbean is usually Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel. Then both itineraries usually always include Royal Caribbean's private island, Labadee, Haite.

Labidee is in my opinion THE best private island. It's huge and has a free tram to take you around the island to the various beaches and activities. It has multiple beaches, an ocean water park, a zip line, and a lot of water related activities like snorkeling, ocean kayaking, jet ski and para sailing.

Yes I do recommend the ship for adults and especially for kids.

Hey I'm going on a cruise. (Independence of the Seas) What is the best thing to do on the cruise?

I'm excited and need help making an itinerary of things to do. 15 year old boy.............

Answer :
Well, as Bajan Princess said, it depends on what you like to do. Like to read, there's a library on board. Like to dance, there's a club up top. Like to sun, deck chairs all over the place. Like to swim, there's a pool. Etc. You have to be more specific.

Answer :
The most fun thing to do on our first cruise, was to enjoy all of the excursions. Check everything out before you go. Read what is offered and sign up online. Saves tons of time, and believe me, you will need that. You can snorkle, para sail, zip line, shop, the list goes on and on. As far as the ship itself, the late night intertainment is great. Oh one big thing that we wished we would have done sooner was, have our pictures done. While on the ship they have photagraphers that give you a full sitting, if you like the pictures you can buy them. Every night was a different background. Only took a few minutes. Have fun. Also bring good sun screen!

Answer :
Well it depends on what you like to do. If you gave your cruise stops then it would have been easier to give you a few suggestions. You can go for a dip in the pool, check out the fitness room. Go to the top and check out the scnery and you can even get into water sports on the cruise!

You can ask this in the cruise section for better answers!

Have you been on Independence of the Seas Caribbean Cruise?

Should I bring my expensive SLR digital camera on this cruise? Who guards your belongings while you are at the beach? How safe are the excursions? Belize City, Costa Maya, Cozumel?

Answer :
You definitely want a camera. Guard your belongings? Im assuming you mean while your in the water? Its just like going to a normal beach, royal caribbean doesn't have crew members with you..your responsible for all your belongings. The excursions are usually very safe, because they are recommended by the cruise line and organized by the cruise line. they know when your boat leaves and where you need to get back too. making your own excursions is less safe. and can be dangerous. All of those destinations are Beautiful

Answer :
I have been on many cruises and always take my camera. While you are on ship you have two options for protecting your camera. You can lock it in your cabin safe (every cabin has one) or you can put it in your luggage and lock the luggage (store it under your bed.)

When you go to the beach you are/will be on your own to protect your belongings (unless you go to a beach that has lockers). You will have to count on friends and family to watch your "stuff". Most times the beaches are full of people from your ship but you still have to watch that your things do not "walk off".

Excursions are safe as the cruise line takes care to select reputable tour operators and they will not and do not take you into unsafe areas. In addition, the officials of countries that you visit know that they make their money off of the tourist trade and they provide enough police protection and patrols to keep criminal elements away (for the most part). You still have to be on guard and not leave things laying around.

I have been to Cozumel many times and also to Costa Maya. Had no problems whatsoever. I have the same cruise booked and will be going to the 3 ports you listed later this year on the Independence. I have cruised on the Freedom, which is an identical ship, and you will enjoy the cruise. Don't miss the free ice show.

Answer :
Deck 5:

http://www.royalcaribbean.com/findacruis…

There is a Ben & Jerry's on that floor as well as many other shops. It's NOT FREE and you will have to present your room card. The cost of the yogurt is charged to your house account and at the end of the cruise, it is charged to the credit card on file.

There are workers in the shop, and no you can't serve yourself.

Average taste. There is nothing to write to Mom about.

Usually the promenade opens at 8am and closes around 11pm.

There are soft serve ice cream machines in the dining room/cafeteria located on Deck 4.

Is the Royal Caribbean ship "Independence of the sea" a fun ship?

PLEASE READ WHOLE QUESTION BEFORE ANSWERING

I would like to know if anyone has ever cruised on the ship "Independence of the Sea" from Royal Caribbean. The reason I am asking is because I want to know if it is good or not. We might be going over spring break, and that is a cruise that we want to go on. It fits all the dates that we need, and is priced reasonably. I looked it up and it sounds pretty good, correct me if i'm wrong but one of their biggest ships? I was just wondering if it would be suitable for a 15 year old...does it have a lot of things kids can do?

And no, im not going to do Carnival because the cruises there just repeat what we did last year. Fun day at sea, Progresso (Which I thought was not a very nice place to stop) Cozumel, (It was AWESOME there!) and then fun day at sea and back to new orleans. I live in Iowa and we don't like to fly, especially with the price of airlines. So we drive, and it's way cheaper. but back to my question, Is independence of the sea a good cruise ship?

I will give best answer. Thank you!

Answer :
I have not cruised on the Independence YET. We'll be cruising on it later this year. BUT, I have cruised on one of its twin sister ships, the Freedom of the seas. The Freedom, Independence and Liberty are all identical ships so when you look for a cruise at a great price search for all three of those ships. We went on the Freedom in November 2006. It was a great cruise. This is what I have written in the past about that cruise.

The ship holds over 3,000 passengers but we completed boarding in about 30 minutes from the curb to our cabin. It would have gone faster if they had been ready at a couple spots.

I loved the balcony cabin we had. It was roomy and had plenty of space for clothes. The cabin had a great pillowtop bed and was very comfortable in comparison to beds on other ships. There was a flat panel HDTV in the room, a safe, and a shower stall with a sliding door. Our room included a love seat and coffee table.

The ship has a mall area down its middle with shops on both sides, including a barber shop, coffee shop, and a place where you can get free food 24/7. They have hot pizza available for you there 24/7. That's in addition to the 24/7 free room service. The ship has some features that other ships don't have. The rock climbing wall is on many RC ships. But the new "flow rider" is unique to RC's Freedom and Liberty of the Seas ships. It is a place where you can go surfing on a boogie board right on the back of the ship. It works great, although I didn't try it. There is stadium seating for people to watch or sit while awaiting their turn. The ship also has an ice skating rink and during the week there are two days when there is a free ice show that is great, kinda like the Ice Capades. The ship also has a full sized basketball court and mini-golf.

This ship is great for kids and families with kids. On the pool deck there is one area called the H2O Zone which is essentially a small water park for kids; but us big kids can play there too. It has water cannons, a small lazy river, a pool, and falling water all over. Kids will love it. Then the middle of the ship has another pool where everyone can get wet or use a hot tub. Then up further there is an adults only area called the Solarium with a pool and two hot tubs that extend over the sides of the ship. These tubs are huge, can hold maybe 12 people and you can look over the side of the tub at the ocean.

The ship has THE best gymnasium I have ever seen on a cruise ship. All of the latest equipment, including weight machines, rowers, steppers, treadmills and each has its own TV screen so you can watch TV while you workout. It also has a boxing ring and some other new high tech stuff. Also has steam room and sauna for those who use the gym.

In addition to the ice shows there was a show in the main show room each night. There is a casino and there are bars and lounges all over the ship. There is an internet cafe but I would skip it as it way too expensive and just wait until you get to a port stop where you can usually get internet service in a cafe for only $5. for an hour (vs $50 an hour on ship).

The only thing I did not like about the ship was its Windjammer Cafe where everyone goes for breakfast and lunch if they don't go to the main dining room, is too small for everyone and people were walking around looking for a table after they got their food. We decided to just order the free breakfast room service an eat on the balcony.

The Royal Caribbean Freedom class ships all use Labadee, Haite as their private island and that place is fantastic. It has several beaches and lot of beach and water activities and you can even take a tour that does a zip line across the beach.

Does Independence of the Seas have walk in steps in the pools?

Does the Royal Caribbean cruise Independence of the Seas have walk-in steps to the swimming pools? The website isn't very clear.

Answer :
No, it does not have step where you can just walk into the pool. Cruise ship pools cannot be sloped or the water would spill out. So on the Independence, and its twins the Liberty and Freedom, there is a hand railing to negotiate a couple steps to get over a spillway to the edge of the deeper part of the pool and there you must use hand railings and use the underwater steps (like a ladder) to get into the pool itself. The Solarium pool is the same way, you must use the hand railing and ladder.

Answer :
im not sure but im going on the 4th of july!!!!! i can't wait!!!

How can you get free Ben and jerry's ice cream on the Independence of the seas?
