How much money to take on a cruise?

My 14 year old son is going on a Mediterranean cruise with his friend from school family. The ship is called the Independence of the sea. He is going on the 1st of august. My question is what sort of clothes does he need to take and how much money does he need to take?

Answer :
The weather in the Mediterranean in August is generally in the 70s - 80s so pack accordingly to be comfortable. He should definitely pack some comfortable shoes. While on ship, the dress is generally casual but for dinners, he will need to have a nice pair of slacks (khakis are fine) and nice shirt (a polo shirt or button up will do). They will likely have a couple formal nights as well, which he does not necessarily have to participate in, but its a good idea to pack a suit.

Money wise, he will not really need money on the ship itself. Virtually all of his purchases will be linked to his ship card which is tied to a credit card. He can however pay the charges in cash once the trip is completed. He will certainly need cash for cabs, tips, etc. in port.

Now it depends how much you trust him not to run up the bill but I would suggest minimizing the cash he takes and have him put most of his purchases in port on a Visa card (the commercials aren't lying...it is accepted more places worldwide than MasterCard and Amex). He should be able to use the card for bigger purchases like souvenirs, restaurants, tickets to museums, shows, etc. If he loses it, he's not stuck without any money and there is little liability if stolen. If you go this route, I would say maybe $50/port for incidentals. If you go cash only, steer more toward $150 - $200/port.

He should only change a little bit at a time. He should be able to exchange money into euros (or whatever currency is relevant) at the purser's desk or once he gets into port. He doesn't want to exchange $200 in Egyptian pounds, spend $50 of it and be stuck with it when he gets back or having to trade in the remaining $150 in for $125 in euros.

Good luck and have fun!

Answer :
when i go on a trip i take $100/per day, but on a cruise for a 14y/o, about $150 should be plenty for a 7 day cruise. that will give him enough spending cash for gifts for friends at home
